The Terrance Sund Memorial and Unclaimed Veterans Remains Fund
Terrance Sund died in Vietnam in 1967, and for decades there was no headstone or marker memorialising his short life. The Menomonee Falls native drowned in a Viet Cong tunnel on 6 December 1967. He was 20 years old. His remains were returned to Wisconsin the following month and rested at Wisconsin Memorial Park Cemetery in Brookfield until 2015.
Steve Conto, a Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion, took action. From his efforts the Terrance Sund Memorial Fund was developed within the Wisconsin American Legion, and Steve worked with the WDVA to identify cremated veteran remains, verify veteran status, and see that those veterans got a proper burial. Steve passed away in 2011 and the fund carries on.
It pays the cremation and burial costs of Wisconsin veterans who have no next of kin, so that every one of them is given the military burial they earned. The fund sits under the Wisconsin American Legion Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, Federal Tax ID 26-1582528.
